A Breath from the past: the underrated edition

Let's remember more fantastic routines from the history of gymnastics and some gymnasts that did not receive the attention they deserved.

Tatiana Lyssenko is maybe one of the most underrated gymnasts of her era. True, at that time talent was just pouring out of old USSR and Romania, as well as China and the US. Yet Lyssenko had just a great quality about her as well as huge difficulty: her double twisting Yurchenko on vault, and beam are legendary.

Henrietta Onodi: the Onodi on beam has become a household skill in today's gymnastics, nevertheless few people know who Henrietta Onodi really was and that beam was not her only fabulous event. Her floor exercise has a joy that is palpable, and I love it! Her vaults were incredibly clean. She was hampered by the fact that she represented a minor gymnastic country: Hungary, and in a time when judging bias was everyday business, this fact made it difficult for Onodi to get to the top. Yet she was resilient and because she was so good, she got to the top anyway. She got medals in several big competitions like World championships and the Olympics. She tied with Lavinia Milosovici of Romania for the gold in the vault event final at the 1992 Olympics in Barcelona and on FX, performing to Hungarian Rhapsody, she finished second behind Milo. Onodi was definitely memorable.

Aurelia Dobre: This great Romanian got injured before the Olympics in Seoul which really hurt her possibilities in those games. In the World Championships in Rotterdam the year before though she was the shinning star taking the AA as the youngest gymnast to ever do so only a few days before turning 15. Even hampered by injuries she did help Romania capture the silver with the team in 1988 Olympics and is remembered by fans as just a great gymnast.

Fan Di and all the great Chinese bar workers: After this year's world championship and how underscored the Chinese were on UB even when they hit, I feel obligated to remember how they have dominated this apparatus for a long long time, without being acknowledged for such. Fan Di, Li Li, He Kexin and just masters of this apparatus and deserved to be remember time and time again.

Ekaterina Lobaznyuk: This 2000 Olympic team member with the Russian team and three time medalist is just fantastic. She had just a natural talent for the sport and it showed in her every move. Her FX to Haglia Nagila is something else and it wipes the floor with Aly Raisman's and even Sandra Izbasa's enactment of that great tune.

Enjoy!
